What is a hardware cloth?
Hardware cloth is a woven mesh made by interlacing various sizes of wire to form a metal fabric that can be used for animal cages, fence material, strainers, and filtering screens. The most common gauges of wire used to make hardware cloth are 16, 19, 23, 24, and 27 with 19 being the largest and thickest.
What is the difference between hardware cloth and chicken wire?
One easily identifiable difference is the size of their openings. While hardware cloth openings are typically one inch wide or smaller, chicken wire gaps can vary, with some as wide as two full inches. Additionally, while they are both made from steel, hardware cloth tends to be thicker and thus more durable.
Will 1/2 inch hardware cloth keep mice out?
Concrete: reinforced — minimum thickness of 2 inches; not reinforced — 3 ¾ inches. Galvanized sheet metal: 24 gauge or heavier. Perforated sheet metal grills should be 14 gauge. Hardware cloth (wire mesh): 19 gauge, 1/2 x 1/2-inch mesh to exclude rats; 24 gauge, 1/4 x 1/4-inch mesh to exclude mice.

I did some research, and the general consensus is that a 19-gauge hardware cloth is the best option. As noted by one wire mesh expert a 19-gauge wire will be more than thick enough to keep a range of animals at bay.
